The OSZi has started the process of translating the GNOME project (used mainly in the ubuntu distros) into the main local languages. The project will start with Bemba. The bemba that will be used is simple bemba or what we may call bemba 'Light'. Some items will still have English translations where the equivalent Bemba does not exist.
The Bemba locale under iso 639 Code, 'bem' has been submitted with most common entries done. Check http://o2.it46.se/afrigen/statistics.php. As soon as a glibc locale file is opened, we shall be good to go. The idea is that we finish Bemba and move on to the other major Languages. What this means, if we do a good job, is that all software vendors will have access to our Locales such that even cell phones can have our languages on them. When you are installing some software, you will be able to pick a language such as Bemba or the other local languages as default.
The entries for the Bemba locale file preparation has been completed. We now await the full locale file to be created for us. However, we can already start the translation. If you visit the Bemba translation page above, you can see the files due for translation and the status of each. Look for the alacarte file and download the .po file that I translated earlier. It gives an idea of what the translation looks like. I suggest we set up a small meeting where I can explain the process so that we work together quickly.
